Week of November 14, 2016

Dear Staff,
We wanted to take a moment to thank Erika Bowen for last week’s staff meeting on student engagement.  She shared some excellent information that served as the basis of some important reflection and conversations.  We thought this would be a good time to build on this notion of student engagement by sharing a few TPT (Total Participation Techniques) reminders each week.  As you plan your lessons, try to be intentional about abandoning the “hands raised” method of participation and move towards ways that require ALL kids to participate instead.  Here is a blog post with some of the more commonly used TPT’s, but it has some less commonly used ideas as well.  I was particularly intrigued with #14 – Gamestorming and would love to see this in action!  If anyone is willing to give it a whirl, please let us know so we can stop by and check out the learning in action!

Always Rise Above

What’s On My Mind:

I always find it interesting how the universe works.  It seems like things just appear out of the clear blue when I need them most.  That was the case last week when I opened up my Facebook page to find that my dad had sent me a short video clip.  My dad does not really post that often, and he definitely doesn’t post things directly on other people’s walls, so when I saw this notification, my natural inclination was to think, “What in the world?”  I opened it up a little skeptical of what I might find, and lo and behold, it was a nugget of wisdom that I desperately needed to hear in that very moment.  You see, I am guilty of this very thing.  Even after 42+ years of trying to get it right, I still mess up.  And even worse, after 42+ years of coming to terms with my own shortcomings and the shortcomings of others, I still sometimes get caught up on focusing on what went wrong.  This little video is a powerful way to shift that perspective, not only in the minds of our students, but in our own adult thinking.  When given a million compliments and one criticism, it’s completely “normal” to focus on the one thing that is wrong.  But why?  That’s not to say we shouldn’t be self-aware and focus on our areas for growth, but I think we’re all too quick to dismiss or overlook all that we do WELL.  So this blog post is for us, the over-achiever-perfectionist-workaholic psycho’s out there.  Just for a few minutes, sit down in silence and focus on the MANY things that are going right as opposed to the one or two things that are going wrong.  And then take this to the next level.  Share this idea with your students and encourage them to seek not only the good in themselves, but the good in others.  This is the type of paradigm shift that can change the world.  So just do it.  Bask in your glory, even if just for a few minutes, and then pass it on to those around you.  Working together, I am confident we can make this world a brighter, more positive, loving, and caring place.  Go ahead.  Do it.  I dare you. 🙂

Love,

Juli

Professional Development:

Here is a great article I saw this week that totally reminded me of CSD!  Let’s never take for granted what an amazing climate we have created at our amazing school.  I love their tagline – “A great place to be a kid.”  What a cool idea!  As we go into the week ahead, let’s all renew our commitment to the CSD mission and vision and continue to make CSD a “great place to be a kid.”  Love you guys!
